Sam Boyd’s Fremont Hotel & Casino in downtown Las Vegas opened in 1956. It was designed by Wayne McAllister, the architect who also designed the Desert Inn, the El Rancho Vegas, and the original Sands Hotel. Just 2 years after its opening, a teenage Wayne Newton got his start in Las Vegas when he performed there in an act with his brother Jerry. They continued doing shows there for the next five years.

“Sam Boyd” got added to the name in 1983. It is located at the end of Fremont, at a spot called Four Corners — meaning the casinos Fremont, Four Queens, Golden Nugget, and Binion’s — where Fremont Str. and Casino Center Blvd. intersect, at the start of the Fremont Street Experience. The hotel has 447 deluxe rooms and suites in an Asian decor, lots of bamboo, stone and clean lines. If you stay in a suite, there’s already a refrigerator but in the king or doubles guestrooms you can request a refrigerator. There’s a 10% discount on room rates for military, seniors, AAA members.

Boyd hotels are all “sister” hotels, so when you stay at the Fremont, you have privileges to swim in the California Hotel’s rooftop pool — and use the fitness center there too, which is one block away. (Just show your room key for access.) Pool opens up again April 5 and closes for the season in November.

Casino

Fremont has 1000 slots, video poker, and keno machines, and 24 table games. There’s free wifi on the casino floor.

Blackjack games can be found at limits starting at $3. They have a race and sports book with tons of screens, a whole panoply for individual viewing and more everywhere so you can see all the action of your sporting event.

Second Street Grill — fine dining with steak, seafood, and poultry; American cuisine “with Pacific Rim influence.”
Paradise Buffet — 8 stations. Open 7am to 10pm or 11pm on Fri & Sat. Also a cafe here.
Tony Roma’s — ribs, seafood, and steaks. Casual dining.
Lanai Express — quick food, both Chinese and American dishes, burgers, hot dogs, salads, shrimp cocktail. Food court.
Dunkin Donuts
Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory — shop for fancy choc like Chocolate Bears, the size of paws; dipped strawberries, more.
